DeKalb for Seniors, Inc. is excited to launch a new program at the Lou Walker Senior Center – the DeKalb Caregiver Resource Network. This is a free program that provides support, information, and resources to seniors who serve as caregivers in their families and communities. The program will allow at least 50 caregivers to experience periods of relief from constant care of a homebound person.
The program will offer limited respite care vouchers, monthly caregiver support meetings, workshops and referral programs. The Caregiver Group meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 4:00 p.m. at the Lou Walker Center, Room A1233, 2538 Panola Road, Lithonia, Georgia 30058.
This program is sponsored by DeKalb For Seniors, Inc., the fundraising arm of the Lou Walker Senior Center, through a grant made possible by funding received from the DeKalb County Human Services Department and the Office of Senior Affairs. With the exception of Adult Day services, no other caregiver services or caregiver support groups exist in the southern part of the county.
Respite Care/Sitter Services will be made available to members who wish to participate in activities, but who are responsible for providing round-the-clock care for their loved ones. Respite services are designed to offer caregivers’ opportunities to step away from the care setting and participate in activities that may help relieve stress. The Caregivers Resource Network will offer vouchers for membership to LWSC or the person’s local senior center (if fee-based); other stress relieving events, special quality of life enhancing activities such as dinner and a movie, Caregivers Morning Out, or vouchers for time to rest and attend to personal matters, which is something that many senior caregivers report as a significant need. These services are designed specifically for the caregiver.
For more information about this program, or if you are an Agency interested in being a part of the Resource Network, please contact Sharyn Hailey or Brenda Colbert at (770) 322-2900.
The Lou Walker Senior Center is a multipurpose facility for active senior adults age 55 and older. The 40,000 square foot facility offers spaces and amenities to meet the needs and interests of today’s active older adults. The architectural structure of the facility and programming stimulate the mind and body to remain active.
