LITHONIA, Ga. – The horrific effects of Hurricane Harvey in Houston, Texas, last week, and the subsequent floods changed the lives of its 5 million residents forever. Now recognized as the largest natural disaster in the United States, thousands of evacuees are struggling to regain normalcy.

DeKalb Commissioner Mereda Davis Johnson, as partnered with St. Johns United Methodist Church in Houston to host a gift card drive to benefit local seniors affected by the hurricane. The drive will run from Sept. 11 through Sept. 15. Cards can be dropped off at the Lou Walker Senior Center, 2538 Panola Road, Lithonia, Georgia 30058, anytime between 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Gift cards of any amount will be accepted from any big box stores, such as Lowes, Home Depot, Walmart or Target, along with cards from any national retail chains, restaurants and gas stations. Prepaid cash cards such as Visa and American Express are also welcome. Families living in hotels can use these cards to cover housing costs.

A partial list of suggested gift cards that can be donated include: Walmart, Target, Sam’s Club, Burger King, Chick-fil-A, McDonald’s, Arby’s, The Home Depot, Lowe’s, Cracker Barrel, IHOP, etc. H.E.B. (Texas-based only), Walgreens, CVS, Racetrac, Chevron, Shell and Exxon Mobil.

Gift cards will be distributed to those in need by St. John United Methodist Church, located in downtown Houston and Northwest Houston.
